The red-and-silver striped lion originates from their heraldic symbol and remained the defining emblem of the region. The modern arrangement of the lion with the eight silver eight-pointed stars was formally adopted after the re-establishment of the state following the German reunification in 1990, symbolizing the unity of the historical territories that form modern Thuringia within Germany.
